I’m Wijke, and I started my training to become a lactation consultant in September 2020. I am now a certified lactation consultant (NLG and IBCLC).
In 2005 I moved to London to work as an au pair. I already knew that I loved working with children and was ready for a new challenge, so becoming an au pair in London was the perfect step at that time. In one of the families I worked for, the mother was expecting her second child, who was born while I was still there. During that period I learned a lot about caring for newborns, not yet as a professional, but that’s when I realized how much I enjoyed working with infants.
In 2007 I began my nursing studies with the goal of working in maternity care. I graduated in 2011 and was immediately hired to work on the maternity ward at the Máxima Medical Center in Veldhoven. There I joined the hospital’s breastfeeding working group. To be honest, that wasn’t my first choice at the time, as participation in a working group was mandatory, but looking back, it turned out to be a wonderful decision.
At that time many people still considered breastfeeding a bit old-fashioned, something I really wanted to change. Together with the lactation consultant at the Máxima Medical Center, I organized information sessions for expectant parents about breastfeeding. It was quite exciting, but also incredibly valuable and educational.
Soon after I had the opportunity to start training as an obstetric nurse, which allowed me to deepen my knowledge about the importance of breastfeeding even further. For many years I worked at the Máxima Medical Center and later at the Anna Hospital, gaining extensive experience in the breastfeeding working group, caring for new mothers, and completing my training as a lactation consultant. Now I am proud to run my own private practice.
Since April 2021 I have also been working as a clinical lactation consultant at the Anna Hospital, where I try to visit as many mothers as possible to support them in the early days of breastfeeding.
Over the years I have filled my backpack with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Today I hope to help as many women as possible with all their questions and challenges around breastfeeding.
