Lactation expert
Wijke Koehorst
A warm heart for breastfeeding.

I’m Wijke, and I started my training to become a lactation consultant in September 2020. I am now a certified lactation consultant (NLG and IBCLC).

In 2005 I moved to London to work as an au pair. I already knew that I loved working with children and was ready for a new challenge, so becoming an au pair in London was the perfect step at that time. In one of the families I worked for, the mother was expecting her second child, who was born while I was still there. During that period I learned a lot about caring for newborns, not yet as a professional, but that’s when I realized how much I enjoyed working with infants.

In 2007 I began my nursing studies with the goal of working in maternity care. I graduated in 2011 and was immediately hired to work on the maternity ward at the Máxima Medical Center in Veldhoven. There I joined the hospital’s breastfeeding working group. To be honest, that wasn’t my first choice at the time, as participation in a working group was mandatory, but looking back, it turned out to be a wonderful decision.

At that time many people still considered breastfeeding a bit old-fashioned, something I really wanted to change. Together with the lactation consultant at the Máxima Medical Center, I organized information sessions for expectant parents about breastfeeding. It was quite exciting, but also incredibly valuable and educational.

Soon after I had the opportunity to start training as an obstetric nurse, which allowed me to deepen my knowledge about the importance of breastfeeding even further. For many years I worked at the Máxima Medical Center and later at the Anna Hospital, gaining extensive experience in the breastfeeding working group, caring for new mothers, and completing my training as a lactation consultant. Now I am proud to run my own private practice.

Since April 2021 I have also been working as a clinical lactation consultant at the Anna Hospital, where I try to visit as many mothers as possible to support them in the early days of breastfeeding.

Over the years I have filled my backpack with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Today I hope to help as many women as possible with all their questions and challenges around breastfeeding.

Services
prenatal consultation
€80
ca. 60 min
During a prenatal consultation, I can help answer all your questions about breastfeeding even before your baby (or babies) is born. We can discuss specific topics such as diabetes during pregnancy, antenatal (in-pregnancy) pumping, planned cesarean birth, multiple pregnancies, Down syndrome, skin conditions, or any other underlying medical issues in mother or baby.
Curious to know how I can support you? Below you can read more about the different consultations I offer. Whether you are still pregnant, have recently given birth, or are returning to work, I provide guidance that fits your needs and pace.
initial consultation
€120
ca. 90 min
After giving birth I can offer help and advice whenever needed. Sometimes things don’t go as smoothly as you expected; breastfeeding can be painful, your baby might have trouble latching, or you may wonder if you’re producing enough milk. These are all common concerns, and you don’t have to face them alone. During an initial consultation you’ll visit me at my practice in the Anna Hospital. In some cases I also make home visits. I will ask you a few questions and, if necessary, examine your baby’s mouth and your breasts. I’ll observe a feeding session, answer your questions, and provide personalised advice. Together we will create a plan that best suits you and your baby.
| Home visit €135 (excluding around 20 minutes of one-way travel time).
follow-up consultation
€65
ca. 30 min
Sometimes you may need my support again. This can be on my advice, or simply because you as parents feel the need for some extra help. As you are already familiar with me and your situation, the follow-up consultation comes at a reduced rate.
| Home visit €80, excluding travel time of approximately 20 minutes (one way).
pumping consultation
€80
ca. 60 min
There are so many different breast pumps available, often with quite a price tag attached. It can be difficult to know which one will actually work best for you. That’s where this pumping consultation can help. Together we’ll look at which pump suits your needs and preferences. I have several models available for you to try out. Would you like a quiet pump, a wireless one, or the option to pump from both sides at the same time? And what is your budget? We’ll go through all of this together so you can confidently choose the pump that’s right for you. Brands you can try include Medela (Freestyle and Magic in Bra), Youha (Ins Gen 2), Ardo (Melia), Baboa, Vulpes Goods, Evite, Horigen (Decent Go and 3D), Elvie (Pump, Stride 1.0 and 2.0), WOWmom, NAYD, and mom&e.
Back 2 work
€80
ca. 60 min
Some mothers look forward to it, while others find it quite challenging, but at some point it’s time to go back to work. It can be nice to be around adults again, yet it’s also wonderful to spend time with your little one. Did you know your employer must provide a private space with running water where you can pump or feed, and that you’re entitled to extra time for this? I’m happy to help you prepare for this new phase. Together we’ll plan a consultation to answer your questions and help you find your balance.
phone consultation
€30
ca. 30 min
Sometimes you may have a small question that doesn’t require an in-person visit. In that case, you can easily reach me by phone.
Deep oscillation consultation
€120
ca. 90 min
Deep oscillation is a gentle and effective form of therapy used for various breastfeeding-related problems.
With my hands, I apply the deep oscillation therapy. The treatment is precise and very gentle, yet it simultaneously works deep into the tissue — up to 8 cm. Thanks to this depth effect, areas can be treated that would be unreachable or too painful with other methods
During a consultation, I take a detailed medical history (an interview about your situation and symptoms), and together we explore the possible causes. Based on that, we create a personal treatment plan, so we can work purposefully towards recovery and relief of the symptoms.
